National Horse Show president Mason Phelps, Jr., announced in May that E. Hunter Harrison was named chairman of the board for the National Horse Show Association of America Ltd. Born in Tennessee, Harrison served for many years as president and CEO of the Canadian National Railway before retiring in 2009. He has left a legacy of sponsorship in the show jumping field, including the prestigious $1 Million CN International Grand Prix that takes place each September as part of the Spruce Meadows Masters tournament in Canada

His Double H Farm, which he owns with his wife, Jeannie, is one of the top show stables in the industry. Managed by the couple’s daughter, Cayce, it’s home to a number of world-class show jumpers, including Let’s Fly and Rufus, shown by Olympic gold medalist Rodrigo Pessoa.

Harrison also serves as the special liaison for horse show management to the North American Riders Group and has held advisory roles for Spruce Meadows, the Global Champions Tour and the Winter Equestrian Festival.

“The National Horse Show Association is thrilled to have Hunter Harrison join us as chairman,” Phelps said. “He brings a wealth of knowledge and hands-on experience that will be invaluable as we move forward with this event at its new home at the Alltech Arena at the Kentucky Horse Park.”  The 128th edition of the Alltech National Horse Show will be staged at the Kentucky Horse Park in Lexington, site of last year’s Alltech FEI World Equestrian Games. The show will be held from November 2–6 at the new Alltech Indoor Arena.

Also joining the board is longtime member of the National Horse Show Trophy Committee, Patricia Hill, and Eric L. Straus, who was named to temporarily fill the seat of the late Gene Mische and recently confirmed as a regular member.

Founded in 1883 at the original Madison Square Garden, the National is America’s oldest indoor horse show, firmly established as a major fixture on the national and international sports and social event calendars. The National Horse Show Association’s primary activity is the annual production of the National Horse Show and all ancillary events. Over the years, the National has provided financial support to many worthwhile charities.
