McLain Ward and Rothchild take the victory lap in Aachen, Germany.

McLain Ward and Rothchild were victors in the Yageo speed class at Aachen.

Zero faults, 55 seconds: That secured the American rider, McLain Ward, the victory with his 10-year-old Artos son, Rothchild, in the Yageo Prize speed class at the World Equestrian Festival in Aachen, Germany, July 17.

The 35-year-old McLain Ward, who lives in New York, won team gold at the Olympic Games in 2008. He ranked seventh at the 2010 World Championships in Kentucky.

Second place also went to the USA: Margie Engle jumped clear with the 11-year-old Indoctro/Uptown son, Indigo, in a time of 55.85 seconds. The Brazilian rider, Alvaro Miranda, finished third on Ad Wilbert Z (56.01). The best German rider was Ludger Beerbaum (Riesenbeck) with Couleur Rubin. The pair came seventh (0/ 58.78).

Later that same day, there was no need for a jump-off in the Rolex Grand Prix of Aachen, as Janne-Friederike Meyer and Cellagon Lambrasco were the only pair to emerge double clear after round two, which saw a field of 18 take to the field.

“I would never have allowed myself to dream that I would win here. This is the best day in my life. We have improved every year and I have worked hard for it and I am incredibly proud. Last year we had eight faults and it is absolutely unbelievable that I managed to win today,” the 30-year-old said after her ride. “There were a few tricky spots in the course, but on the way to the last fence, I knew we’d done it.”

French rider Kevin Staut came second on the KWPN mare, Silvana de Hus. The pair reached the finish line in 70.28 seconds with four faults. Beezie Madden was the top-placed U.S. rider at No. 14 on Coral Reef Via Volvo. McLain Ward and Antares F were 16th, followed by Lauren Hough and Quick Study at 17.

Just 20 years old and competing for the first time in Aachen, German rider Andreas Kreuzer came in third on the Mecklenburg-bred stallion Chacco-Blue. “It is amazing riding here in Aachen,” commented Kreuzer, who won team gold at the 2010 Young Riders European Championships.
