Rodeo at the Thomas & Mack Ce

The 2011 Wrangler PRCA National Finals Rodeo takes place Dec. 1-10 in Las Vegas. More than 140,000 people are expected to attend the event, which augments the traditional competition events  with activities like the Cowboy Christmas Gift Show, the Spurs and Spikes Annual Golf Tournament and the Miss Rodeo Pageant.

Rodeo rounds take place at the Thomas & Mack Center, where $1.8 million in prize money will be up for grabs to the top 15 athletes in nine categories: All-Around, Bareback Riding, Steer Wrestling, Team Roping, Saddle Bronc Riding, Tie-Down Roping, Steer Roping, Bull Riding and Barrel Racing. Ancillary sessions sprawl throughout the town, where many of the casinos will have big-screen displays featuring the Thomas & Mack action for those without tickets to the perennially sold-out show. The Las Vegas Convention Center and South Point Hotel and Casino will also host some of the special events.

Some hotels are fashioning a pitch around “after-parties.” The Gold Coast Hotel & Casino wants to help fans celebrate the “Super Bowl of Rodeos” with its National Finals Tonight show, featuring eight-time World Champion and Cowboy Hall of Famer Donnie Gay, World Champion Tie-Down Roper and All-Around Cowboy, Joe Beaver and TV host Dan Miller doing a daily highlights show recapping the events.

Billing itself as “Where all the Cowboys go after the Rodeo,” admission is free and fans will have a chance to win prizes including Fender guitars autographed Fender guitars by country legends such as George Strait, courtesy of Wrangler.

Gary Leffew’s legendary Buck’N Ball will feature live country music, dancing, free mechanical bull rides, and drink specials nightly, following the conclusion of the day’s NFR events. The Texas Jamm Band (featuring members of George Strait’s Ace in the Hole Band) and country-rock sensation Scotty Alexander are scheduled to perform.
