CDFA finds 3 new cases of EHV-1 in OC

By January 18, 2012

The California Department of Food and Agriculture reported today that it has confirmed three new cases of neuropathogenic Equine Herpes Virus-1 (EHV-1) at the quarantined Orange County premises where the disease surfaced earlier this month. That brings to a total of eight confirmed positive horses on the premises of that particular facility.

All exposed horses on the property are being monitored and enhanced biosecurity measures have been implemented. The source of the outbreak has not been identified. The initial epidemiologic investigation reveals no link to the three 2011 California neuropathogenic EHV-1 incidents.

The potentially exposed horses at that facility are being monitored. A full epidemiologic investigation at the affected premises has been initiated by the CDFA Animal Health Branch.

Although one Orange County horse show — the Blenheim EquiSports Winter Classic, Jan. 13-15 — was cancelled, the Langer Equestrian Group’s LAEC Opener is going ahead as planned this weekend (Jan. 20-22).
