Zone 10 Equ Champs Ridin’ On Sunshine

Stephanie Goodson of Beverly Hills, rides her own Poetic to the 2015 Zone 10 USHJA Equitation Championship for riders 18-and-over.

Stephanie Goodson, Grace Tuton and Grady Lyman took home the Zone 10 USHJA Equitation Championships in a spirited competition at the HITS National Sunshine Series II, Nov. 4-8 at the HITS Desert Horse Park in Thermal, CA.

The Championship consisted of three phases spanning two days, and included over fences in phase one, a flat in phase two and a medal-type over a fences course in phase three. Each rider’s first two scores were averaged together, with the phase three score added to determine the winner.

Lyman, of Rancho Santa Fe, California, won in the 12- to 14-year-old category aboard Sinatra’s Ruhm, owned by Kristi Clarkson, with a total score of 167.5.  Tuton, of Paradise Valley, AZ, claimed high-score in the 15- to 17-year-old division, riding Lautento, owned by Nicodemus Farms, to rack up 162 points. The 18-and-over champ, Goodson notched 165.5 on her own Poetic. Goodson hails from Beverly Hills, CA.

Reserve champion in the 18-and-over category was Sophie De Selliers, of Seattle, WA, with a score of 160.5 on Mr. Brando, (owned by Gwen McCaw). Laura Owens, of San Francisco, CA, received third place on Constantin (owner, Emma Waldfogel) with a score of 157.

Runner-up in the 15-17 set was Madeline McFadden of San Clemente, CA, piloting her own Leopaldo to a score of 149. Third place went to Kit Cunningham of Thermal, riding Estrella (owner, Laurie Cunningham) with a score of 84.

Among 12- to 14-year-olds, Seattle, WA, resident Grace Pearson navigated her own Black Label to second place on a total of 165. Emma Reichow, of Menlo Park, CA, made sweet music with her own Spotify, in third on 160. For complete scoring, click here.

This was the second year the USHJA Zone 10 Equitation Championships were held at the HITS National Sunshine Series in Thermal, providing junior and amateur riders a chance to showcase their horsemanship skills in a formal setting.

The 2016 Zone 10 USHJA Equitation Championships are scheduled to take place at the HITS Desert Horse Park Nov. 9-13
