The Right Spin

By May 30, 2012

“Putting the ‘fun’ back in fundraising” is how CPHA Foundation president George Chatigny described the 8th Annual California Professional Horesmen’s Assn. Bowling Benefit, which raised $4,000 over two rounds on Friday, May 25.

The event drew 100 bowlers and their friends to the Pickwick Bowl in Burbank on May 25, and coincided  with the Langer Equestrian Group’s Memorial Day Classic Horse Show at the Los Angeles Equestrian Center. “This was the best bowling benefit we’ve had to date. The excitement of the lanes and the friendly competitive atmosphere made for a beautiful evening,” Chatigny said.

The CPHA Foundation is a benevolent organization dedicated to aiding equine professionals (including trainers, riders, grooms and other support staff) in times of need. Assistance comes in the form of scholarships, grants and gifts. A recent beneficiary is the widow of Alain Vaillancourt, a top rider and trainer who succumbed to pancreatic cancer.

The CPHA Foundation’s mission statement also includes educating good principles of horsemanship and fostering amateur equestrian sports and sportsmanship.

The next CPHAF event is a fishing trip on Aug. 13, between the Blenheim Summer Classic I and II shows. The group will board the Clemente at Dana Point Sportsfishing. Although Chatigny, who has been angling since he was “a little squirt,” is a serious enthusiast of the sport, everyone is welcome and rental equipment is available. Tickets are $100 each and participation is limited to 30.

“There is nothing better than being out on the ocean for a day of sunshine and California offshore fishing. You don’t have to be a pro to enjoy that. The most fun we’ve had was with silly things like the girls outfishing the guys. The idea is to have a good time.”

Chatigny had previously organized similar events, but this is the first time it will be under the auspices of the CPHAF. Included in registration is a Mega Buck Raffle ticket, valued at $100, “which essentially makes the fishing trip free,” Chatigny said. Deadline for sign-up is Aug. 1, and interested parties can contact Chatigny by emailing george@la-equestriancenter.com or phoning (818) 254-5913.
