Ward and Rothchild Score at Spruce
By Staff Report July 6, 2012Olympic veteran McLain Ward (USA) and Rothchild posted two clear rounds to win the $35,000 PwC Cup, a 1.60m FEI class at the Spruce Meadows North American Tournament, July 5. The course, designed by Michel Villancourt (CAN), had 15 jumping obstacles and 495 meters of track.
This win, aboard the 11 year old Warmblood gelding, is Ward’s third FEI win at Spruce Meadows this season. “The level at Spruce Meadows is phenomenal” commented Ward after the victory. “No victory here ever loses meaning for me.”
The duo were fourth in the $35,000 Sun Coast Financial Grand Prix, a 1.60m class on July 4.
Ward was selected for the US show jumping team for the 2012 Olympics with Antares F, an 8-year-old KWPN gelding. Following the trials, the duo landed fourth on the USEF’s ranked list.
Ward and Antares were 10th in the 1.50m Energy Cup earlier that same day, and 18th in the 1.45m Suncast Cup on July 4. Ward is coming back from a January accident in which he shattered his kneecap.
Coming back from the mishap, he won his first big class, the $75,000 Empire State Grand Prix, at the Old Salem Farm Spring Horse Show in May, riding Grant Road Partners’ Zander.
In May he marked his seventh win in the big class at Devon, taking top honors at the $100,000 Grand Prix of Devon with Antares.
