Simpson, Madden, Sailor Sizzle at Del Mar
By Staff Report October 8, 2015Del Mar’s famous seaside setting was a scenic backdrop to the start of the Del Mar International Horse Show, Oct. 7-18. Will Simpson and The Dude took top honors in the 1.40m jumper class, and Simpson was also third on E-Unanimie De La Haie, both owned by Monarch International. Enrique Gonzalez and Santos, owned by Carlos Hank, Jr., were second in the field of 12.
The Del Mar crowd had the rare opportunity to watch in action East Coast-based superstars Beezie Madden and Kent Farrington, both of whom compete internationally, with great success, for the USA. Madden is the FEI’s No. 2 ranked rider in the world (after Scott Brash, GBR). On Wednesday, Madden won the 7-Year-Old Jumpers class on Coach (by Conair), owned by Abigail Wexner.
Okay, enough of the sexy stuff! Those classes had $500 and $200 stakes, respectively. The winner of the big Wednesday class, the $5,000 1.35m jumper competition, is not an Olympic champion like Simpson, or the FEI’s No. 2 world ranked rider, like Madden — it was Mike Edrick Stables assistant trainer Jamie Sailor, riding Jodie Camberg’s Veneto DHZ. The most competitive class — the $500 1.30m Jumper, with 67 entries — was won by California’s own Nayel Nassar (EGY) and Baraka.
On Thursday, the excitement didn’t let up, with Eric Navet (FRA) capturing the prize in the $5,000 1.40m Jumper (34 entries) on ASB Conquistador, owned by Signe Ostby. Will Simpson and Monarch International’s E-Unanimie De La Haie second, and Beezie Madden and Coach claiming third.
Show jumping and hunter competition continue through the 18th at this West Palms Event Management show, culminating in the $150,000 Longines FEI World Cup Jumping Del Mar 1.60m CSI4* on Saturday, Oct. 17.
