Tevis Cup Moved to October

By June 17, 2011

In an unusual move, the Tevis Cup board of governors has voted to change the date of the 2011 Tevis Ride from July to October 8, 2011, due to unusually high snow packs in the Lake Tahoe mountains where the 100-mile endurance ride takes place.

“The alternate trail from Soda Springs to French Meadows continues to hold on to the record snow pack which will not melt by July 16th because of an unusually cool spring,” a the Tevis group stated in a press release that assessed the situation as of June 1.

“Our scouts have reported up to  10 feet of snow at the Soda Springs Road, which leads out of our alternate starting location for the 2011 ride. The ride date has been changed to October 8th in an effort to use the traditional trail in both the high country and on the lower trail which crosses the American River.”

October 8th is historically a cool, dry day in the Truckee/Lake Tahoe area, and date also assures the presence of a nearly full moon, the availability of the Gold Country Fairgrounds and trails which are not otherwise involved in organized events in the Tahoe National Forest. “The days will be shorter and cooler,” organizers said, urging riders to “adjust your training accordingly.”

Additionally, the Board of Governors have voted to change the date of the Wester States Trail Foundation Educational Ride–a kind of “prep ride” for Tevis–from June 10th to July 16-18, the date previously reserved for the Cup. “We feel this will offer the best experience on the majority of the trail for our educational riders,” the organizers stated.

The Tevis Cup has been held every full moon Saturday in mid-summer since 1955, with the exception of 2008, when wildfires raged in California.
