Remembering Rock Creek’s Herb London

By August 22, 2011

Herbert M. “Herb” London, the operator of Rock Creek Pack Station since 1947, died March 31 at his home in Ojai. He was 92. A memorial fund for trail maintenance on the Mono Pass Trail System has been established in his honor. “My dad was a huge advocate of the wilderness, and he wanted to see that riding and packing were protected,” says his son, Craig London, who continues to operate the pack station.

Herb London grew up in the Glendale area, and attended Occidental College and then UCLA, where he majored in agricultural economics. He was active in the Military Air Transport Corps during World War II and worked for American Airlines.

“He was head of flight operations at Burbank Airport,” said Craig. “When they moved to LAX, he didn’t want to go—he wanted to be a mule packer.” He loved mules and was one of the founders of Bishop’s annual Mule Days and was also a member of the Inyo Board of Supervisors.
